Duplex Milling

What is Duplex Milling, aka Twin Milling?

Duplex milling, also known as twin milling, provides a cost-effective alternative to in-house fly cutting, face milling and grinding. This process is used in applications requiring flat, square and parallel tolerances within .001”.

Duplex mills use opposed shell mills, mounted on a pair of horizontal spindles, to efficiently remove stock to meet tolerance requirements on opposing planes. Requiring just one setup for multiple parts, milling two sides at once is the most cost-effective way of producing high-quality aluminum and stainless steel Machine-Ready blanks.

What are the Benefits of Duplex Milling, or Twin Milling?

Other benefits that duplex milling, or twin milling, provides includes a reduction of internal stress in many metals. This milling process removes equal amounts of stock from both sides of a blank in tandem motion. By reducing stress, the stability of a Machine-Ready blank is improved for additional machining phases.

There is also great versatility in the way blanks can be configured for machining: they can be stacked in multiples and then duplex milled, thus adding greater cost efficiencies through reduced machining time.

What are the materials used for Duplex Milling Services?

DIX Metals can offer duplex mill services on any of the following materials:

  • Tool steels
  • Cast iron
  • Mold plate
  • Copper

Our duplex mills, or twin mills, handle up to 36” in length and produce blanks with very tight tolerances. Allowing DIX Metals to produce duplex-milled, Machine-Ready blanks is an excellent way to preserve valuable, in-house manufacturing time, saving employee hours and dollars. Additionally, our quality standards are second to none.

DIX Metals provides duplex milling services for manufacturers and machine shops  requiring the highest quality product available.

What are the Advantages of Duplex Milling, or Twin Milling?

  • Stock removal to achieve ±.001” on thickness, width, & length
  • Flat, square and parallel tolerances to 0.001”
  • Process capability to mill virtually any material, including exotics
